Ideas for a morning routine from a neuroscientist - Yasmin Boland

Ideas for a morning routine from a neuroscientist… Dr James Doty MD, author of Mind Magic which is all about the science of manifestation … a must read!

  • Start with Compassion

Begin your day with a few minutes of self-compassion. Recognize your efforts, forgive yourself for any mistakes, and affirm your worthiness. As I’ve mentioned, “unless you can care for yourself and let yourself off the hook and be kind to yourself, it’s hard to be kind to others”.

  • Mindful Breathing

Practice a simple breathing exercise to calm your mind. Spend a few minutes each day focusing on your breath, allowing yourself to relax and center your thoughts. This helps to manage stress and brings clarity, as Ruth taught me, “relaxing the body and then slowly breathing in and releasing your breath really had a profound physiologic effect”.

  • Positive Self-Talk

Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations. This can transform your internal dialogue from one of self-criticism to one of self-acceptance and empowerment. As Ruth taught, you can change the narrative by listening to the positive “radio station” in your mind.

  • Visualization of Goals

Spend a few minutes each day visualizing your goals as if they have already been achieved. This practice helps to set neural pathways and aligns your subconscious mind with your intentions. Use all your senses in this visualization to make it as real as possible.

  • Living in the Present

Engage fully with the present moment. Avoid getting lost in regrets about the past or anxieties about the future. Being present allows you to experience life more richly and fully. This practice is central to finding contentment and resilience in daily life.

  • Daily Acts of Kindness

Perform small acts of kindness each day. These can be as simple as a smile, a kind word, or a helpful gesture. Such acts not only improve the lives of others but also enhance your own sense of well-being and connection.

  • Reflect and Reframe

At the end of each day, take a moment to reflect on your experiences and reframe any negative events in a positive light. Understand that every challenge is an opportunity for growth and learning. This shift in perspective can transform your outlook on life.

By integrating these practices into your daily routine, you can cultivate a life of compassion, mindfulness, and wisdom. Remember, it’s not about achieving perfection but about making small, consistent efforts that lead to profound personal growth and contentment.
