A little cautionary tale…
A few years ago, I was scrolling through my Instagram notifications when I came across an email from someone I had met when she attended one of my Moonology workshops.
It said something like…
“Hi Yasmin. I really enjoyed your workshop. I am now going to hold my own Moon workshop and I wanted to ask you a question…”
The writer then asked me a question which showed me she lacked the knowledge of Moonology be running a workshop about it!
I can’t remember the details, but I know I was pretty horrified!
She would have been teaching incorrect information which is not OK. We have to have standards.
It actually really pushed all my buttons, too. When I first started out in astrology, I had an upset with someone who was one of my first mentors. About six months into my obsession with it, a journalist friend at a magazine got wind of the fact that I was becoming a star-gazer. She offered me a horoscope column, with the Singapore Women’s Weekly.
I was ecstatic! It was around the time that I was seagueing from journalism to what I do now.
I was completely hooked on astrology and had been reading about in books and online, and taking part in mailing list groups for hours every day. I was living and breathing it. Writing a column and being paid for it would be so amazing!
A complete kibosh!
But when my mentor of the time got wind of this, she quickly completely kiboshed it.
“You aren’t ready to write a column yet!” she told me. What? I’ve thought about little else lately, I thought. “You have to consider the integrity of astrology,” she said. “You’ve been dabbling. You haven’t studied it properly. The last thing you want is to bring astrology into disrepute!”
I was a bit shattered, but 20+ years later, I know she was right. I wasn’t ready. She did me a favour, by making me see how important it is to maintain the integrity of astrology and for that matter, Moonology. She probably made me a better astrologer, too!
(The first thing I did after that conversation was book myself into a formal course so I could unlearn any mistakes I had picked up along the way!)
Astrology is a many-layered discipline…
Here’s the thing; astrology is a many-layered onion. You can learn the basics (the signs, planets and Houses) quickly enough, but the truth is that the best astrologers consider themselves eternal students of the subject.
I am still obsessed with astrology and still learning all the time! But you can learn chunks at a time if you dedicate yourself.
And let me just say it, you can’t learn it from the memes on the internet – many of which are complete NONSENSE!
So back to the person who wanted to run a Moon workshop without really even knowing the basics.
I didn’t really know what to say. I knew she had the very best intentions. So I very gently corrected her mistake and added
“Maybe you should learn a bit more about Moonology before you start running workshops?!”
And that was when I knew what I had to do…
