I remember when I was first learning astrology, hearing that the first things to look at when you look at someone’s chart are:
– The Sun
– The Moon
– The Rising Sign
But I didn’t just read this once, I read it over and again. So whenever I would look at someone’s chart, I would start here. It felt so complex but in the day and now it’s second nature.
Now I understand why seasoned star-gazers recommended these three as a starting point. Because when you’re first starting astrology, you can stare at the chart and see all these squiggles just think “What the heck? Where on earth should I begin?”
Starting with the Sun, Moon and Rising sign not only gives you a TON of important info about a chart, it also gives you clear directions about where the heck to dive in first!
Your Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign really are the keys to your personality and your astrology chart
Why these are 3 excellent places to start with a chart…
1. The Sun because the Sun is the centre of the chart, the giver of life
It could be argued that all the planets are as important as each other, and in a way they are. (By the way it could also be mentioned that the Sun is not actually a planet, we just call it that because it’s easier. It’s a luminary). In any case, the Sun really is the first place to start. And not just because everybody tends to know where their Sun is. So where is your Sun? If you’re a Leo or a Gemini or a Cancerian or a Virgo (etc), that means your Sun is in that sign. But let’s face it, the Sun is at the centre of our solar system, and all the other planets revolve around it, and in astrology, the Sun it represents the essential you. So it’s a really good place to start….
2. The Moon because the Moon tells you what you need and how you feel
Even though mostly astrology tends to be all about the Sun, in the first instance, the Moon is definitely pretty much as crucial. The Sun tells you about your ego. The Moon, for one thing, tells you about your feelings. And we all know feelings are important! I don’t think we can say that the Sun or Moon is more important than the other. The Moon is also your instincts and what you need in life to feel safe and secure. Because the Moon moves much faster than the Sun, in most cases you’ll find that someone born just a couple of days apart from someone else will have a different Moon sign, making them quite a different person, whereas people born within a few days of each other will normally have the same star sign, all things being equal. So the Moon is a little bit more of a personal marker, too. (I teach a ton about the Moon in my online course here.)
3. And because your Rising Sign is SO personal
Then you have the Rising Sign. People are always wondering why it’s so important and why it’s a part of this big three. The thing is, once you know a person’s Sun, Moon and Rising Sign, you know a lot about them. In fact, at astrology conferences, delegates are often given little stickers on which to write their Sun, Moon and Rising Sign. An astrologer can quickly size you up once they have that information! Put really simply, your Rising Sign is the mask that you wear when you are out in the world. It’s not the real you, which is the Sun, and it’s not your emotional side, which is the Moon, it’s the social face you put on. It’s also the front door to your chart – depending on which sign you have rising, all your other Houses play out from there. Houses? That’s a story for another day!
