Ommm – a little bit of wonderful info about mantras.

Just had an amazing chat with my lovely friend Chris Dorje who has gone from surfer to monk to loving husband and daddy of two running this dharma farm in the UK … (He was a fulltime Buddhist monk for five years – that’s him now sitting on a hay bale!)

I had a question about mantras and we had a good old chat about it. He gave me some simple guidelines which I hadn’t heard before which made a lot of sense to me.

I know that lots of people here are really interested in mantras, so I thought I would put them here as well.

Chanting a mantra is a bit like making a phone call to the Divine

Chris said …

– think of a mantra as making a phone call to someone. So you call them up and you connect with their energy.

– he said this is why you really do one mantra at once. So you do your repetitions of THAT mantra (say 9 times or 21 times or 108 times) before you do another mantra.

– he said, think of it like a phone call. You need to talk to one person at once. And you can visualise the energy as you chart. So for example with the Maha Kali chant we have been doing a lot this year, you would tune into the energy of Kali, the Blue Goddess.

Visualise the Goddess…

As we chatted on the phone Chris said “Think of it like this. Right now you and I are chatting. We know each other, so you know what I look like, so on some level you are picturing or imagining me as we speak. That’s what you want to do when you chant. Think of or visualise the Deity…”

Tomorrow I will tell you what he told me about chanting the word “Ommmm…” at the start of your chant.
