What neuroscience is finally telling us about what we already knew…

For years, decades really, those of us who work with the Moon have been told we’re being unscientific. Woo-woo. Irrational.

That setting intentions at the New Moon, doing the inner work through the cycle, releasing at the Full Moon… none of it is “real”.

Well.

I have some news.

Neuroscience has been quietly building a body of research that, whether it intended to or not, validates almost everything we do in Moonology.

The science didn’t set out to prove us right.
It just did.

“The brain doesn’t distinguish between a ritual and a strategy. Both create neural architecture.”

Let me walk you through it, phase by phase.

New Moon

Setting intentions, backed by neuroscience

At the New Moon, we set intentions. We get quiet. We tune in. We ask ourselves what we truly want.

Neuroscience calls this implementation intention formation.

When you clearly state a goal, especially when it’s connected to emotion and meaning, your brain begins to encode it differently. The reticular activating system starts filtering your reality to notice opportunities aligned with what you’ve declared.

The science: Goal-setting activates the prefrontal cortex and changes attention and perception. You begin to literally see the world differently once you’ve named what you want.

In other words, your New Moon intentions aren’t wishful thinking.
They’re reprogramming your brain’s filter system.

Waxing Moon

Taking action, backed by neuroscience

As the Moon grows, so do you.

This is the phase for action. Planning. Momentum. Writing your to-do list and actually following through.

Neuroscience loves a list.

Writing down specific steps activates the hippocampus, reduces mental overwhelm, and frees up energy so you can focus. It also creates a dopamine reward loop. Every tick builds motivation.

The science: Externalising goals into written steps improves follow-through significantly. Writing engages motor memory, making your intentions more real to your nervous system.

The Waxing Moon is essentially structured neurological support for your dreams.

Full Moon & Waning Moon

Releasing and surrendering, backed by neuroscience

This is the part that used to raise the most eyebrows.

Letting go. Surrendering. Trusting.

But neuroscience tells us something powerful.

The brain has a network called the default mode network. It activates when you stop pushing. When you rest. When you allow space.

This is when integration happens.
When insights arise.
When solutions come that can’t be forced.

Chronic striving actually shuts this system down.

So when you “release to the divine”, you’re not doing nothing.
You’re activating a different, essential kind of intelligence.

The science: The default mode network is linked to creativity, self-awareness, and insight. Surrender is a neurological strategy.

Forgiveness work

Also backed by neuroscience

The Full Moon and Waning Cycle is when we forgive. And if you’ve ever wondered whether it’s worth it, science is very clear.

Holding onto resentment keeps your body in a stress response. Elevated cortisol. Overactive amygdala. Tension that doesn’t resolve.

Forgiveness changes that.

Not for the other person. For you.

The science: Forgiveness reduces stress, lowers cortisol, improves sleep, and activates the part of the brain linked to calm, clear thinking.

When you release a grievance, your brain literally settles.

Ancient lunar wisdom and modern brain science are saying the same thing.
They’re just using different language.

None of this surprises me.

It delights me. It validates everything we’ve been doing. And it gives me even more conviction in this work.

The Moon has always been a mirror.
Now science is holding one up too.
