A BRIEF OUTLINE OF NATURAL HEALING

by Elizabeth Slingsby

Elizabeth Slingsby lives in Preston in the North West of England where she has worked as a Healer for approximately twelve years. She began, she says, "since discovering that it's possible, and more than that, ‘natural’ for us to heal each other and ourselves." Check out her site www.thepeacefulplanet.co.uk.

We live in an age where science and technology have almost become a belief system. They are what we turn to for the answers to our questions and the solutions to our problems, and somewhere along the way we have been persuaded that they are always right, and anything that cannot be explained in an orthodox scientific way, is imagination, flight of fancy, or even deception.

However, it seems a revolution is taking place. Where we handed over to scientists, responsibility for, the answers to our deeper questions, and to modern medicine, solutions to problems regarding our health, we are now starting to accept some of those responsibilities for ourselves.

At this point I should perhaps make clear, that I have great admiration for the wonders of modern medicine, and as a Healer I do not see myself as an 'alternative' therapist, rather as a 'complementary' therapist. There is no reason why Healing cannot work in conjunction with the best aspects of mainstream medical care, and not, as some medical practitioners seem to fear, as conflicting or counter productive.

Not so very long ago if healing was mentioned, it would almost always be preceded by the word spiritual. Healing is strongly linked to our spirituality, and works through the spiritual aspect of our being as well as the other aspects, and I suspect that for many people this also creates an association with Spiritualism as a religion.

On the other hand there is the school of thought that sees any Healing, not directly connected to a religious belief, as some sort of heresy or dark art. However, the truth is that generally speaking, Healers are simply human beings with an over-riding desire to ease the pain and suffering of their fellow human beings. They also happen to have an above average natural ability to tune in to the universal energies which can help to do this, and their own belief system is not as important as how good a Healer they are.

When we are thirsty and in danger of dehydrating, water is a gift which can save our lives. When we are starving and in danger of dying from malnutrition, food is essential to keep us alive physically. But, whether we wish to admit it, or to bury it in our subconscious, there really is more to every human being alive on this planet, than the physical 'machine' we can see and touch, and it is here that healing has its function.

Healing is a holistic therapy. The word 'heal' relates to wholeness, and it is the whole person that Healing addresses. Each of us will have experienced a problem in one or another aspect of our being, at some time in our life. It may be physical, emotional, mental, or it may be connected to our spirituality. Whatever aspect it is, no matter how healthy our other aspects are, the one that is in difficulties affects them and can bring us down.

It is interesting to note, that whilst there has recently been such progress and expansion in medical science, there has also been an unprecedented expansion in a return to the natural remedies, such as Healing, Acupuncture, Reflexology, Herbalism, and so on, that had worked for many cultures and civilisations, before the birth of modern medicine. If we go back far enough in history we will find that healing has played a role in many of the major cultures and religions of the world. It is not the 'property' of any particular one.

Nowadays, many health problems have become chronic in such a way that we incorporate them into our daily lives and eventually forget what it is like to feel truly healthy and fully alive. So, for a time we ignore these problems, and continue our lives, without any respect for the extra work our system is undertaking to deal with the damage being done.

We usually become aware of these conditions only when they manifest in a physical way that causes us distress or discomfort, and this is usually long after they have first taken root in the more subtle aspects of our being. As a result, we consult a physician who treats the physical symptoms, and when the problem seems to subside we feel confident that we have dealt with it.

Because we are now so accustomed to the 'quick fix', even those of us who decide to try something different, and consult a Healer, will more often than not abandon the treatment as soon as those physical symptoms disappear.

But, if we are weeding in our garden, we do not pluck the leaves, stems and flowers, and leave the root in the ground and then believe that the weed will not reappear again very quickly. We know that we have to get to the 'root' of the problem.

If Healing, is allowed to deal with each level of the problem right back to its root in the subtle aspects of our being, it can take a little longer, but it will usually have a more complete effect. The process of healing is non invasive and without side effects, and the comment I receive most often from clients who come to me for Healing, in addition to any specific benefits, is that they find it extremely calming and relaxing.
